BERLIN, April 29, 2026 US weighs troop cuts in Germany after Trump-Merz dispute
The United States is evaluating a potential reduction of its military presence in Germany, a move that follows criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's remarks on the U.S. offensive against Iran.
Troop Numbers and Current Deployment
Currently, approximately 86,000 U.S. soldiers are stationed across Europe, with Germany hosting the largest contingent—around 39,000 troops. These forces are primarily under the command of the U.S. European Command (EUCOM), which coordinates NATO and bilateral defense operations. Germany has long been a strategic hub for American military operations, serving as a logistical and command center for missions in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
