Eugene, June 11, 2026

The American Ja'Kobe Tharp improved the world record in the 110-meter hurdles to 12.75 seconds in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, surpassing the previous mark of his compatriot Aries Merritt, which had stood since 2012, by five hundredths of a second.

Tharp ran the hurdles on Thursday in Eugene and stopped the clock at 12.75 seconds. He displaced Aries Merritt, whose world record of 12.80 seconds dated from 2012, from the top of the all-time list. According to the organizer, Tharp moved from 32nd to first place in the all-time world rankings.

The record was set in the semifinals of the U.S. college championships; the 110-meter hurdles final is scheduled for Friday (Eugene local time). However, before the record can be officially entered in the World Athletics books, the time must still be ratified.
