Santa Clara, July 2, 2026

In the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the USA team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 (1-0) on Thursday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, becoming the third host nation after Canada and Mexico to reach the knockout round.

Match action and goals

The goals for Mauricio Pochettino's side were scored by Folarin Balogun in the 45th minute and Malik Tillman in the 82nd minute via a free kick. In front of 68,827 spectators at the home of the San Francisco 49ers, the venue of past Super Bowls, the match proved one-sided: the USA controlled more than 75 percent of possession for long stretches and created a number of high-quality chances in the first half alone.

Early on, Christian Pulišić had the chance to open the scoring: in the 4th minute, the star of the US attack tried his luck from 20 meters in a central-left position but was denied by Muharemović. Ermedin Demirović, VfB Stuttgart's striker, also tested US goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 11th minute with a shot from 19 meters that was too central. In the 15th minute, Balogun fired from 16 meters and narrowly missed the right post; in the 19th minute, Antonee Robinson headed a McKennie cross from six meters just over the bar, while also colliding with Bosnia's keeper Nikola Vasilj, who was able to continue after treatment.
