Commemoration in New York at Ground Zero
The United States commemorated on Thursday the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the coordinated terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. At the center of the memorial events were once again the three places that were attacked at the time: the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon near Washington, and the area near Shanksville in the state of Pennsylvania, where a fourth hijacked plane crashed.
At Ground Zero in New York, relatives of the victims, survivors, rescue workers, and politicians gathered for the traditional ceremony. A minute of silence honored those who lost their lives 25 years ago in the towers of the World Trade Center, in the hijacked airplanes, and at the Pentagon. The names of the victims were read aloud, accompanied by moments of silent remembrance.
