Varta files for self-administration insolvency

According to previous information, Austrian investor Michael Tojner and sports car maker Porsche each hold a 50 percent stake in Varta. The ownership arrangements are now being scrutinised in the course of the insolvency proceedings, as creditors and investors will assert their interests in the proceedings.

Most recently, the company generated revenue of around 793 million euros while posting a loss of 64.5 million euros. The economic distress had thus already been foreshadowed in the financial statements, before the formal insolvency filing followed.

The news of the insolvency sent shockwaves through the financial markets. Varta's share price came under pressure, while speculation mounted about possible paths forward for a restructuring or a breakup of the company. In financial circles, a breakup is mentioned as a conceivable option.

Course of the Self-Administration Proceedings

Varta is regarded as a company with a long tradition in the German battery industry. The headquarters in Ellwangen bundles a large share of production and the workforce. Politicians in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria face the challenge of cushioning the consequences for employees. Talks on possible aid, site developments, and alternative employment for staff are likely to gain importance in the coming weeks.

According to its own statements, Varta is a Montana Tech subsidiary and thus part of a broader industrial group. The insolvency also raises questions about the future of the group's remaining holdings.
