Financial Distress and Failed Restructuring
With this step, Varta is responding to a strained financial situation. An independent analysis determined that the company needs additional short-term funding in the mid-double-digit-million range, financial circles report. As recently as last year, Varta had restructured itself under the German Restructuring Act (StaRUG) in order to avert insolvency. That attempt has now evidently failed.
Varta is broadly positioned as a battery manufacturer and produces, among other things, button cells for the wireless headphones of a US corporation. That production is to continue at the site until November, but in future manufacturing will likely come from Asia. The loss of the order is further worsening the company's economic situation.
Employment and Locations
According to its own figures, the company employs around 3,260 people, many of them at its headquarters in Ellwangen in Baden-Württemberg. Worldwide, Varta has around 4,000 employees, roughly 3,000 of them in Germany. A plant with around 350 workers in Nördlingen, Bavaria, is already set to close in the autumn, further heightening concerns about employment.
