The industry association VCI is forecasting a production decline of 1.5 percent in the German chemical and pharmaceutical industry for 2026. President Markus Steilemann warns that the slight recovery is only a breathing pause, driven by special effects stemming from the Middle East conflict.

The German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) has lowered its forecast for the full year 2026 and now expects a production decline of 1.5 percent in the German chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

As the VCI announced on Thursday, revenue in the sector totaled 106 billion euros in the first half of 2026, down 1.0 percent from the previous year. Production also fell significantly: compared to the first half of 2025, it declined by roughly three percent. "Die Schwäche der chemisch-pharmazeutischen Industrie in Deutschland hat auch im zweiten Quartal angehalten," the association stated.
