Austrian energy giant Verbund AG reported a 32% year-on-year decline in first-quarter profit to €267 million, driven by significantly weaker hydropower generation amid low water levels.
Hydropower Output Plummets
Verbund's hydropower operations suffered a sharp downturn in the first quarter of 2026, with key metrics falling well below historical averages. The generation coefficient for run-of-river power plants — which measures hydropower output relative to historical periods — stood at just 0.78, marking a 5-percentage-point drop from the previous year's 0.83 and a 22-percentage-point decline from the long-term average of 1.
Storage power plant generation decreased by 2.3% compared to the first quarter of 2025, contributing to an overall reduction in hydropower output of 373 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 5,095 GWh. The company attributed the declines to unusually low water flow across its hydroelectric facilities.
