The VfL Wolfsburg women's football team won the first leg of the Champions League qualification against Inter Milan 2-0 (1-0) and secured a strong position for the return leg in Italy.
The VfL Wolfsburg kicked off the decisive phase of European qualification on Wednesday with a clear victory. In front of a home crowd, the team prevailed 2-0 (1-0) against Inter Milan, giving themselves a comfortable starting position for the return leg.
From the outset, Wolfsburg put in a focused performance and took early control of the match. The halftime lead through Svenja Huth was the result of a structured style of play in which the hosts waited patiently for their chances. Inter Milan found it difficult to get into the game against the compact defense.
After the break, Camilla Küver added the second goal for Wolfsburg. The goal came at a time when Inter Milan had to take more risks, opening up spaces for counterattacks. The Italian side pushed forward offensively from then on but was unable to seriously trouble the Wolfsburg defense.
Lara Prasnikar also contributed over the course of the match to Wolfsburg maintaining control. She was one of the players who stabilized the hosts' midfield and ensured that Inter Milan never came within striking distance. Overall, the VfL was disciplined and efficient throughout the full 90 minutes.
On the Italian side, Chiara Robustellini was one of the more notable players, trying to drive the visitors' play forward. Inter Milan, however, was barely able to create truly dangerous chances against the well-organized Wolfsburg defense.
The result puts Wolfsburg in a strong position for the return leg in Italy. An away win or a draw with at least one goal of their own would mean qualification for the Champions League group stage. Should things take a turn for the worse, however, the VfL would face a difficult task in the return leg.
The VfL Wolfsburg had come through the previous qualification rounds against other European opponents. With the victory over Inter Milan, the team now stands on the threshold of the group stage of the Champions League, the most important competition in European women's club football.
For Inter Milan, the situation has been significantly complicated by the home defeat. The team would need to score at least two goals in the return leg to turn the tie around while simultaneously preventing Wolfsburg from scoring.
With an eye on the upcoming fixtures, Wolfsburg will look to maintain their focus and build on their performance in the return leg. The squad knows that a place in the Champions League group stage carries great significance for the club both sporting wise and financially.
Icelandic international Cecilia Runarsdottir, part of the Wolfsburg squad, also brought her experience to the game and was one of the team's pillars. Her contribution underscored the depth of the squad available to the VfL in this decisive phase of the season.
