Vienna, June 30, 2026

The City of Vienna bid farewell to the artist VALIE EXPORT, who died on June 14, 2026, at the Zentralfriedhof with a memorial service at which City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler (SPÖ) delivered a tribute written by Elfriede Jelinek.

VALIE EXPORT was one of the internationally best-known representatives of contemporary Austrian art. With works such as the "Tap and Touch Cinema" and numerous body and performance pieces, she had explored the boundaries between body, action, and public space since the late 1960s. Her death on June 14, 2026, triggered a wave of tributes in the domestic art scene and beyond. Now the ceremonial farewell took place at Vienna's Zentralfriedhof, one of the republic's most tradition-rich honorary cemeteries.
