VIENNA, April 20, 2026
The 43rd Vienna City Marathon attracted a record 49,400 registrations but saw a significant increase in participants failing to finish compared to last year, with only 8,600 completing the full marathon.
Record Participation and Disappointing Finisher Numbers
This year’s event, held on April 20, marked a milestone with 49,400 registrations across various races, including the marathon, half-marathon, and 10-kilometer events. However, the marathon itself saw a notable decline in finishers, with 8,600 crossing the finish line at the Burgtheater, down from 9,300 in 2025. The half-marathon remained steady with 13,000 participants, while the 10-kilometer race saw a slight majority of female runners for the first time.
Organizers noted the challenges faced by runners, particularly in the marathon distance. "It was not what I had hoped for," said Austrian top athlete Andreas Vojta, who finished ninth with a time of 2:15:07. "Es sind gemischte Gefühle, wie ich es schon öfter gehabt habe im Marathon," he added, reflecting on the mixed emotions many runners experienced.
