The Vienna Festival cancelled the discussion event planned for June 7 with German-American tech billionaire Peter Thiel on Saturday evening, following weeks of growing criticism and boycott threats from festival participants.

Festival director Milo Rau and managing director Artemis Vakianis made the decision together, the festival announced. Rau stated that he had "self-cancelled" in his role as curator and moderator of the Thiel evening. The cancellation occurred after a boycott movement formed among the contributors, triggered by the withdrawal of French sociologist Geoffroy de Lagasnerie.

Rau, who had been preparing the invitation to Thiel since last autumn, defended the original plan. "I considered it democratically relevant," he said verbatim. Thiel had agreed to a structured, contextualized debate format – it would have been the first time he faced such a public forum instead of acting privately.
