According to a new study by the University of Vienna, infants begin responding rhythmically to music and showing first dance movements from around twelve months of age.

Research design and methodology

A research team led by developmental psychologist Trinh Nguyen from the University of Vienna investigated from what age babies transfer musical rhythms into their movements. For this, 79 infants aged three, six, and twelve months were played two children's songs: the Spanish song "La Vaca Lola" and the Hungarian "Hopp Juliska". The children's movements were compared against a control condition in the analysis.

The result: according to the study authors, the babies' movements are indeed rhythmic and influenced by the music. "Die Bewegungen sind tatsächlich schon rhythmisch, und sie sind von der Musik informiert", the research team explained. "Aber sie sind nicht wie bei Erwachsenen, die dann etwa im Takt wippen", said Nguyen.
