Madrid, 11 July 2026
Vinicius Jr. has issued a public apology on Instagram after Brazil was eliminated in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup by Norway, with the 25-year-old Real Madrid forward describing the disappointment as enormous.
Vinicius Jr., who wore the captain's armband for Brazil at the tournament, said he took full responsibility for the result. "Als Kapitän übernehme ich die volle Verantwortung für das Ausscheiden", he wrote. He added: "Das Nationaltrikot zu tragen, ist der größte Stolz meines Lebens".
Captain takes responsibility
Brazil fell 1-2 to Norway in the round of 16 on the previous Sunday, a result that ended the Seleção's campaign earlier than at any World Cup in the modern era. The loss extended a 24-year wait for a sixth world title, with the team's previous triumph having come in 2002, when Ronaldo inspired the South Americans to victory. As Vinicius Jr. put it, "Die Frustration ist enorm".
