Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has spoken out in an interview with "Bild am Sonntag" in favor of avoiding closures of the four at-risk German plants where possible and instead seeking "smarter solutions."

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has spoken out in favor of not closing the four German plants considered at risk. "Es gibt intelligentere Lösungen, als Werke zu schließen," Blume said in an interview with "Bild am Sonntag." Instead, defense companies could be located at the sites in the future, or models developed in China could be built there.

The at-risk plants are the locations in Zwickau, Emden, Neckarsulm, and Hannover. "In den gefährdeten Werken in Zwickau, Emden, Neckarsulm und Hannover arbeiten 40.000 Menschen," the newspaper reported. Overall, Volkswagen employs more than 650,000 people worldwide according to company figures, with the board having left open how many of these jobs could be cut.

Threatened locations and their significance

Blume had already announced that production capacity would be reduced by one million to nine million vehicles per year by 2030. Given the difficult conditions, he spoke of a challenging environment: "Unser Umfeld war noch nie so anspruchsvoll und risikobehaftet wie heute. Geopolitische Spannungen, Handelsbarrieren, Regulatorik, Marktumbrüche und intensive Konkurrenz".
