Nairobi, Kenya — April 26, 2026
Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe shattered the marathon world record on Sunday, becoming the first runner to complete the 42.195-kilometer distance in under two hours with a time of 1:59:30, surpassing previous marks set under both competitive and controlled conditions.
Historic Breakthrough in Marathon Running
The 29-year-old Sawe achieved the unprecedented feat during a prestigious race, finishing 1 minute and 5 seconds faster than the previous world record held by his late compatriot Kelvin Kiptum, who ran 2:00:35 in Chicago in 2023. Sawe’s performance marks the first sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive setting, distinct from the laboratory-assisted run by Eliud Kipchoge in 2019.
"Der 29-Jährige gewann am Sonntag bei dem prestigeträchtigen Rennen in 1:59:30 Stunden und war damit 1:05 Minuten schneller als der bisherige Weltrekord seines Landsmanns Kelvin Kiptum, aufgestellt 2023 in Chicago," according to corroborated reports. Kipchoge, another Kenyan legend, had previously clocked 1:59:40 in Vienna’s Prater park under optimized conditions, a performance not recognized as an official world record due to its controlled environment.
Sawe’s record comes just over two years after Kiptum’s tragic death in a February 2024 traffic accident in Kenya, months after his Chicago triumph. The victory also underscores Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running, with Sawe joining a lineage of record-breaking athletes from the East African nation.
