The White House on Friday formally asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on its renewed attempt to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from the central bank's board, citing allegations of financial misconduct in a fresh legal escalation.
The administration's legal argument
The petition, signed by Daniel Scavino on behalf of the administration, argues that Cook should be removed even if her alleged conduct does not amount to a felony. In his letter, Scavino wrote that "even if your conduct does not rise to the level of felony offense, it appears to demonstrate a level of gross negligence in financial transactions that calls into question your competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator." The phrasing underscores the administration's effort to lower the threshold for removal from the Fed board, which has historically enjoyed broad statutory independence.
