East Rutherford, June 24, 2026
Players and coaches of several World Cup teams are criticizing the pitch at the final stadium of the Soccer World Cup in East Rutherford near New York as unusually hard, while world governing body FIFA is explicitly defending the playing surfaces.
France's midfielder Adrien Rabiot said the pitch at the World Cup final stadium felt more like artificial turf. France's coach Didier Deschamps also spoke of unusual ball behavior on the surface. The match between France and Senegal ended 3:1 for Les Bleus, but was played under difficult conditions.
Already after Brazil's opening match against Morocco, which ended 1:1, Brazil's attacking star Vinícius Júnior had criticized the playing surface. The 25-year-old said the pitch was difficult to play on and the game was slowing down. In addition, the grass was drying out quickly because of the heat, further hampering the flow of play.
