German football star Lukas Podolski has retired from professional football at age 40, ending a 23-year career that included winning the 2014 World Cup.

Podolski announced his retirement via Instagram, posting: 'Ein Kapitel endet, eine neue Ära beginnt' ('A chapter ends, a new era begins'). His final match will be for current club Gornik Zabrze against Radomiak Radom.

The Polish-born striker began his professional career with 1. FC Köln in 2003 and made his German national team debut in 2004. He earned 130 caps for Germany, scoring 49 goals.

Podolski's club career included stints at Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Galatasaray, and Vissel Kobe. With Bayern, he won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2008.
