Kansas City, June 28, 2026

Austria qualified for the round of 16 in the 3:3 (1:1) draw against Algeria on the final matchday of World Cup Group J in Kansas City only in stoppage time and has thus reached the knockout round of a World Cup for the first time since 1982.

The match at Arrowhead Stadium in front of 69,045 spectators began ideally for Austria: In the 28th minute, David Alaba sent Marko Arnautovic on his way with a long ball, who beat Algeria goalkeeper Benbot to make it 1-0. The lead held only until shortly before the break, when Belghali equalized in the 45th minute to make it 1-1 for Algeria.

After the interval, Marcel Sabitzer increased Austria's lead to 2-1 with a shot from 18 meters off the inside of his foot (55th). The Algerians' response did not take long: Riyad Mahrez converted a cross in the 60th minute and leveled at 2-2. In the dramatic closing phase, the match seemed to turn when Mahrez even scored the 3-2 for Algeria in the 93rd minute, leaving Austria "praktisch schon draussen".
