2026 World Cup: Iran Calls on FIFA to Act Ahead of "Pride Match" Against Egypt

Even before the draw of the World Cup groups and before it was known who would face each other there, the global football governing body had declared the fixture a "Pride Match." "Let's welcome the people of Seattle," said Hedda McLendon from the city's World Cup organizing committee to the portal Outsports. "And let's show them how proud we are."

The Iranian Football Federation has evidently spoken out against such "ceremonies or promotional activities" in the lead-up. As reported by "The Athletic," a spokesperson for the Iranian national team said in response to inquiries that it took this matter "seriously" and had "clearly communicated" its own "position" to the world governing body. The federation had also stated that it did not want to see any symbols or representations of the "movement" in the stadium.

Position of the Iranian Federation

"Iran and Egypt are two Muslim countries with deep cultural and religious commonalities, and the views expressed by both federations reflect the values and beliefs shared by the people of both countries," the Iranian federation stated. It took the matter "seriously," a spokesperson for the Iranian national team told "The Athletic" in response to inquiries. It did not want to see any symbols "of the movement" (including rainbow flags) in the stadium.

The world governing body had been informed of the "shared position of both countries," and it was expected that "the necessary steps" would be taken "to ensure that no such ceremonies or promotional activities take place in the stadium or as part of the official match proceedings." It was of the view that FIFA should "take into account the views and concerns of the participating teams" with regard to the match environment and stadium presentation.

FIFA's Response

FIFA, in turn, stated in a response to inquiries that the World Cup is an "inclusive event" and that "rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity" are permitted in accordance with the Stadium Code of Conduct. "Fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome at the matches and events," it added. According to "The Athletic," the Egyptian federation was also asked for a statement.

In the first official "Pride Match" in World Cup history, it is two Muslim-majority countries — where the LGBTQ+ community faces severe difficulties and is even subject to criminal prosecution — that are facing each other. In Qatar in 2022, wearing the One Love captain's armband was banned. The 2026 World Cup is being held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico; fans from around the world are expected, wanting to display their flags in the stadiums.

Tension Between Sport and Politics

The debate thus comes at a time when the World Cup host countries have set out the aspiration to stage a diverse and open tournament. At the same time, the football federations of the nations involved are under pressure from their respective social and political circumstances. Whether FIFA will yield to the demands from Tehran or stick to its line remained unclear initially.

The match in Seattle is part of Group J of the World Cup finals, in which Austria, among others, faces the defending champion. From the organizers' perspective, the "Pride Match" is intended to send a signal of openness and diversity — but the conflict with Iran and Egypt demonstrates how explosive this signal can be in a sporting competition between countries with different values.
