Seattle, 25 June 2026
The Iranian Football Federation has called on FIFA to take "the necessary steps" to prevent Pride symbols and promotional activities in the stadium ahead of the first official "Pride Match" in World Cup history between Iran and Egypt on Saturday in Seattle.
Background: Seattle as the Venue
The clash between Iran and Egypt, taking place on Saturday (5:00 AM CEST) in Seattle, had already caused a stir following the World Cup group draw in December. For both teams, the final group matchday also carries sporting significance as they vie for a spot in the round of 16. The particular explosiveness arises from the combination of sporting importance and the fact that FIFA had designated the fixture as a "Pride Match" because Seattle traditionally hosts the queer community's festival on the last weekend in June.
