The Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled on the day of the match that FIFA may prohibit the historic Iran flag featuring the lion and sun within the stadium grounds at World Cup matches in Inglewood.

As reported by The Athletic, Judge Curtis A. Kin issued the decision on the day of the game, local time. The Institute for Voice of Liberty had sued over the ban on the historic Iran flag imposed by FIFA. The organization argued that the ban violated the freedom of expression of Iranian exiles in the United States.

Judge Kin dismissed the lawsuit. While freedom of expression is indeed a cornerstone of society, it is not unlimited, "such as in relation to private actors on private property, and as previous decisions have shown, it can be regulated in an appropriate manner." The court thereby affirmed the line that stadium operators, as private actors, may set rules on the use of flags.
