Medically, the described course is a severe anaphylactic reaction to the insect venom. Within just a few minutes, this can lead to a sharp drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulties, and circulatory collapse. Such reactions are rare but well known and occur mostly in people who have already developed a pronounced allergy to the venom. Without the rapid administration of adrenaline, for example via an emergency pen, the chances of survival drop rapidly.

Why insect stings can become dangerous

In Austria, according to data from the Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (Road Safety Board), around seven people die each year from the consequences of insect stings. The figure makes clear that allergic reactions to stings from bees, wasps, or hornets are also a relevant health risk in Central Europe. The majority of stings, however, are harmless, with only local swelling and redness.

The municipality of Hohenzell belongs to the district of Ried im Innkreis in Upper Austria. In reports on the incident, the places of Emprechting and Mettmach, which lie in the same district, are also mentioned in addition to Hohenzell. The recovery and the subsequent investigations into the cause of death were accompanied by the police and the local authorities.

According to the mayor, Florian S. leaves a large gap in the village's sense of community. In small Upper Austrian municipalities like Hohenzell, where clubs and fire departments sustain social life, the loss of a young, committed man is felt particularly acutely, Priewwasser said. Several neighbors expressed their dismay at the sudden death.

Advice for allergy sufferers

Around the case, the Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit had already advocated in the past to have allergies to insect venom medically clarified. Those affected can significantly reduce the risk of severe reactions through specific immunotherapy, colloquially known as desensitization. Carrying an emergency pen is also recommended if a known allergy exists.

According to the municipality, the funeral and the memorial service will be held in the closest family circle. According to the mayor, no public memorial event is currently planned; however, in consultation with the fire department, consideration is being given to how Florian S. could be honored in the community. The mourning in Hohenzell and in the surrounding communities continues.

The police and emergency services have since completed their investigations into the exact cause of death. Accordingly, there is no indication of foul play; the cause of death is the anaphylactic shock following the hornet sting. The authorities pointed out that this was a tragic isolated case.
