65 Years of the Wall: Commemoration in Berlin with Klöckner and Weimer

In their speeches, Klöckner and Weimer pointed to the obligation to keep the memory of the East German dictatorship alive. According to the reports at hand, Weimer said: 'Niemand muss sich dafür rechtfertigen, eine glückliche Kindheit, gute Nachbarschaften oder schöne persönliche Erfahrungen gehabt zu haben. With this statement, he explicitly distanced himself from attempts to downplay the GDR and emphasized the incompatibility of personal experiences with an overall political assessment of SED rule.

A Speech Against Downplaying

In her address, Klöckner underscored the enduring significance of a culture of remembrance. She recalled the people who lost their lives at the Wall, the shattering of families, and the systematic surveillance by the Ministry for State Security. At the same time, she warned against forgetting and against attempts to relativize fundamental democratic values. The Bundestag President pointed out that August 13, 1961, remains a date that brings home the vulnerability of open societies.

An incident during the event attracted particular attention. As several observers reported, individual politicians from the AfD apparently sang along to a song that held particular symbolic power in the GDR. The incident triggered critical reactions because singing along to a song regarded as a cipher of the SED dictatorship was perceived as historically ignorant or provocative. Exactly which members of parliament were involved is part of the ongoing debate.

Uproar Over Individual AfD Politicians Singing Along

The commemorative event is part of a series of formats through which the Bundestag, the federal states, and civil society communicate the date of the Wall's construction anew each year. In addition to speeches at the Berlin Wall Memorial and on Bernauer Strasse, these include church services, school projects, and conversations with contemporary witnesses. In view of the growing temporal distance from 1961, initiatives point out that fewer and fewer contemporary witnesses can testify themselves and that archives, museums, and schools must be more strongly involved in this educational work.

Werner Daubner and Achim Neumann, who appeared as contemporary witnesses, described personal experiences from the GDR: censorship, repression, and the omnipresence of the Stasi. Neumann warned that the downplaying of the GDR is not an abstract issue, but directly affects the existence of democracy, because it weakens the ability to distinguish between dictatorship and the rule of law.

Remembrance in a Time Without Contemporary Witnesses

In political debate, the anniversary falls at a time of tense disputes over how to deal with the SED past. While the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship has for years pointed to gaps in research, victims' associations are once again calling for pension claims and the rehabilitation of former political prisoners to be improved. Observers assess the renewed act of remembrance as an attempt to keep these issues visible.

In his speech, Weimer also emphasized that the glorification of the GDR in parts of society is not a nostalgic fringe issue, but a warning. Anyone who downplays the Wall fails to recognize the lived reality of millions of people who were locked up in the GDR. Klöckner concurred and pointed to the responsibility of politics to strengthen democratic institutions while honestly coming to terms with history. In this way, both speakers connected the commemoration with a call for vigilance in the present.
