Margit Schulze, Publishing Director of Ullstein Book Publishers for young audiences, sees more than an isolated case in the store. "Ich glaube, ein Ort, an dem sich Romance-Leserinnen und Fans wohlfühlen und ausschließlich dieses Genre bekommen, ist einfach eine tolle Sache," she says. According to dpa, "The Naughty Chapter" is not the first store of its kind in Germany. A comparable bookstore already exists in Zwickau, for example. Schulze, however, emphasizes the current relevance of the phenomenon: "Es gibt gerade Serien, die Romance befördern. Es geht um Liebesgeschichten. Es ist spannend und unterhaltsam. Die Leute wollen dem Alltag entfliehen. So kommt alles zusammen und Romance ist gerade ein sogenanntes Hype-Genre."

BookTok as a Driver of the Boom

The fact that the visibility of the genre is also reaching brick-and-mortar bookstores is demonstrated not only by specialty shops, but above all by the platform TikTok. Under the hashtag #BookTok, millions of users worldwide share their reading recommendations in the form of short videos. According to figures from TikTok and Media Control, more than 25 million books were sold in Germany alone in 2024 as a result of BookTok recommendations—significant growth compared to the previous year.

The market data supports the trend: according to surveys by Media Control and the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association), romance literature is in high demand. Schulze places the development in historical context: "Ich glaube, es gab schon immer Romance. Man hat es nur anders genannt." Today, the genre is simply finding a new, visible stage—on the internet as well as in stores like "The Naughty Chapter."

A Trend with a History

Schwabe explicitly sees her concept as an invitation to linger: customers come not only to buy books, but to browse, discover, and feel comfortable. That this succeeds is evident in reactions like Laura's, who describes the store as a "safe space."
