Wiesbaden, July 3, 2026
Last year, fewer children were adopted in Germany than in any year since 1990, as the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt) in Wiesbaden announced.
Nationwide, 3,517 children were adopted last year. That is 4 percent, or 145 children, fewer than in 2024, the agency said. This brings the number of adoptions to its lowest level since 1990, the year of German reunification. According to statistics, the number peaked in 1993 at nearly 8,700 adoptions, then halved by 2009.
Stepchild Adoptions Reach New High
According to the report, the vast majority of children were adopted by a new partner of a biological parent. Their share of all adoptions rose from 54 percent in 2010 to 75 percent last year, reaching a new high. At 74 percent, the vast majority of children were living prior to adoption with a couple made up of one biological parent and one stepparent. Overall, stepchild adoptions accounted for 36 percent of all adoptions.
