Wiesbaden, July 1, 2026

The total fertility rate in Germany fell to 1.32 children per woman in 2025, reaching its lowest level in nearly 30 years, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced.

According to final calculations, only 654,241 children were born in Germany last year – the lowest number in the entire post-war period. Compared to 2024, the birth rate thus decreased by 2.7 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office explained on Wednesday. The value referred to as the birth rate stood at 1.32 last year, as the agency in Wiesbaden announced.

Decline Among Both German and Foreign Women

"Die Geburtenhäufigkeit der ausländischen Frauen geht seit 2017 mit Ausnahme des Jahres 2021 kontinuierlich zurück", the Federal Office stated. This trend shows that while the difference between women with German and foreign citizenship in terms of birth rate continues to exist, it is increasingly narrowing. Among women with foreign citizenship, the birth rate stood at 1.78 children, corresponding to a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to the previous year (1.84).
