# Africa as the Big Winner of World Cup Expansion: Nine of Ten Teams in the Round of 16

The progress of the African continent continues the trend of recent World Cups. Four years ago in Qatar, two of five African teams advanced, including Morocco, which had sensationally reached the semifinals and produced the best performance by a team from the continent in World Cup history. Now the ratio has improved significantly once again.

Spots: Africa Still Disadvantaged

The starting conditions for Africa were not ideal. With 53 member associations, Africa was allotted ten starting spots this year, which is still the lowest quota of any continental confederation. Despite this comparatively limited allocation, the African teams used their chances impressively.

Asia Posts a Weak Record

While Africa celebrates, the record for Asia is sobering. It did not go well for Asia; of nine teams, only two remain. Japan and Australia are the only Asian teams that made the jump to the knockout round. New Zealand, as Oceania's sole representative, is also eliminated, having taken a single point.

The European teams also presented themselves strongly. The Europeans also performed successfully, with 13 of 16 in the Round of 16. That means 27 of the 32 Round of 16 participants come from the three continents Europe (13), Africa (nine) and South America (five). From the European contingent, only Turkey, Czechia and Scotland were eliminated in the group stage; the remaining teams, including Austria, reached the next round.

Europe, South America and the Hosts

From South America, five of the six teams that started have qualified; only Uruguay has to head home. CONCACAF, the confederation of North and Central America and the Caribbean, presents a mixed picture. The three host nations USA, Mexico and Canada, who had a fixed spot at the tournament, have advanced. Curaçao, Panama and Haiti, the trio that had to go through qualifying, each finished last in their group.

Overall, the results underscore a shift in the balance of power in world football. While Europe and South America confirm their tradition as dominant football regions, Africa is establishing itself as an increasingly serious factor. The structural expansion of the World Cup to 48 nations has thus achieved exactly what proponents had hoped for: more diversity in the knockout phase and new stories beyond the usual favorites.

The tournament in North America, with this makeup of the Round of 16 participants, becomes a mirror of global football development. The question of whether the African teams can confirm their strong group stage in the subsequent rounds remains intriguing.
