Following the five-month general refurbishment of the Cologne–Wuppertal–Hagen line, a dilapidated railway bridge over the Wupper will remain partially closed for around two months due to a crack, forcing long-distance and regional trains to run on a single track at reduced speed until the end of September.

Deutsche Bahn had extensively renewed the line between Cologne, Wuppertal, and Hagen since the beginning of February. The general refurbishment, with a volume of nearly 800 million euros, was officially completed last Friday. However, on the very last day of the work, a crack was discovered in a steel plate on the bridge over the Wupper near Leverkusen-Opladen. The structure, dating from 1949, had not been renewed as part of the general overhaul, and earlier inspections — most recently at the end of 2025 — had shown no damage.
