After Jewelry Heist at Vienna's MAK, Security Measures to Be Tightened

Consequences for the Museum

According to the institution, exhibitions featuring jewelry from the brand Van Cleef & Arpels are in great demand internationally. The Vienna MAK regularly houses collections and special exhibitions on applied art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Director Anna Gutt emphasized that the collection itself is not affected.

The museum's secretary general, Theresa Hochhauser, is coordinating external communication together with the City of Vienna. Members of the cultural affairs committee of the Vienna City Council were informed, according to sources at City Hall. President Lilli Hollein expressed her dismay at the incident.

Impact on exhibition operations

The stolen jewelry has since been put out for search. Interpol was informed, according to investigators, in order to detect any possible transport abroad at an early stage. The material and cultural value of the pieces is "significant," according to the museum.
