After World Cup Final: Dani Olmo Rejects Apology from Argentina's Assistant Coach Ayala

Ayala's attack on Olmo was one of several incidents immediately after the end of the match. Earlier, Argentine national player Leandro Paredes had shoved the Spaniard Eric Garcia and then grabbed Gavi by the jersey, punched him in the face, and threw him to the ground. FIFA has since launched an investigation into the incidents following the final. This could result in sporting-law consequences for Paredes as well as for Ayala, who as assistant coach of the Argentine team was in the immediate vicinity of the incident.

Olmo himself stated in the interview that he had said "nichts zu ihm" to Ayala before the incident, which is why an apology is not even necessary. The referee of the final is also in the focus of media coverage. Slavko Vincic from Slovenia officiated the match as the first referee from his country ever at a World Cup final. The 46-year-old has been on the FIFA list since 2010 and is ending his refereeing career after the tournament. Vincic had been unable to stop the incidents after the final whistle.

The Argentine Side's Perspective

From the Argentine perspective, the final's evening was already marked by disappointment. The team lost 0-1 after extra time and missed out on another World Cup title. The fact that physical altercations with opposing players and the opposing coaching zone occurred immediately after the final whistle has additionally burdened the international perception of the defeat.

The Spanish football press evaluates Olmo's reaction as a conciliatory but clear final word on the affair. They do not want to jeopardize the sporting success through a continuation of the escalation. At the same time, they have made clear that violence – including from officials in their roles – will not be accepted.
