The backdrop to the conflict is the Falklands War, which lasted 74 days in 1982 and claimed nearly 900 lives: 649 Argentines and 255 Britons. More than 11,000 Argentines were taken into British captivity. The lost war led to the fall of Argentina's military dictatorship. Argentina had occupied the roughly 200 small islands off the Argentine coast, which have been a British overseas territory since 1833. The territory has officially been on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories since 1946. When Argentina occupied the islands in 1982, then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher dispatched a force before which Argentina had to capitulate.

In 2013, a referendum on the islands' future political status was finally held. The referendum went in favor of the United Kingdom. London made clear immediately that the islands were British and that the islanders had a right to self-determination. But for the veterans, too, one thing is clear: the islands really belong to Argentina.

Political Charge

The issue received fresh political momentum in the spring of 2026. It was U.S. President Donald Trump who, in April 2026, raised the question of the islands' sovereignty once again: as part of deliberations on retaliatory measures against NATO allies that did not want to support Trump in the war against Iran, an email surfaced in the Pentagon addressing the U.S. position on possessions of European allies — including the Falkland Islands.

Argentina's Path to the Semifinal

On the pitch, Argentina heads into the match with a flawless semifinal record: in five World Cup semifinal appearances, the team has always gone on to the final. However, the road there was bumpy: in the knockout rounds, Argentina narrowly advanced past Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland.
