Match recap: Argentina fights its way back

The team coached by Lionel Scaloni trailed for long periods after a goal by Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute before captain Lionel Messi turned the game around with two assists. Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute with a shot from around 20 meters following a short corner. In stoppage time, substitute Lautaro Martinez headed home from a Messi cross to make it 2:1. The header in the 92nd minute sealed yet another late comeback for the defending champions, who had already come from behind late in the round of 16 against Egypt (3:2) and in the round of 32 against Cape Verde (3:2 after extra time).

"This is incredible," said an overjoyed Lautaro Martinez after the final whistle. Messi, who had barely featured in the first half, upped his game considerably and once again proved the match-winner with his two assists. With a total of eight tournament goals and twelve assists, the 39-year-old shares the lead in the ranking of the best World Cup scorers with Kylian Mbappé. "Messi in the last 20 minutes – he could do whatever he wanted," said coach Scaloni, heaping special praise on his superstar: "They play like they're eight years old."
