Algiers, June 7, 2026
The Algerian Football Association (FAF) extended the contract of national team coach Vladimir Petkovic on Sunday until July 2028, just days before the start of the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The 62-year-old Swiss coach Petkovic, who was born in Bosnia, took charge of the Algerian team in February 2024, succeeding Djamel Belmadi. Under his leadership, the team, nicknamed "the Fennecs," qualified for a World Cup for the first time in twelve years – a result that triggered euphoria in the country.
The Algerian Football Association announced the contract extension on Sunday. Petkovic, who holds Swiss citizenship, is to lead the "Fennecs" through the upcoming qualification cycles and possible tournaments. The term until July 2028 gives the association planning security beyond the immediate World Cup.
