Algiers, August 3, 2026

The Algerian Football Federation and national team coach Vladimir Petkovic have parted ways amicably following Algeria's group-stage exit at the World Cup this summer.

The separation came after Algeria's disappointing performances at major tournaments. At the World Cup this summer, Algeria were eliminated in the round of 16 by Switzerland, losing 0:2. A few months earlier, the team had already been knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations against Nigeria — a result that was regarded as a disappointment according to Algerian media.

Petkovic had been in charge of Algeria as national team coach since October 2022. He had still impressed with the team during World Cup qualifying, securing their place at the finals. However, the hoped-for results failed to materialize at the major tournaments.
