The Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group Holding has announced that it will issue new shares worth 80 billion Hong Kong dollars (equivalent to approximately 10.2 billion US dollars) and invest the entire proceeds in expanding its AI capabilities.

According to a company statement released on Sunday, the capital increase will be used entirely to strengthen its Artificial Intelligence business segment. Planned investments include chips, cloud infrastructure, and large language models. This significantly extends Alibaba's strategic focus beyond its traditional online retail business.

According to the company, the placement of new shares is taking place against the backdrop of strong investor demand. Alibaba justified the move by pointing to the growing capital requirements in the AI segment, driven by rising expenditure on computing power, hardware development, and research.
