In the case of a wasp venom allergy, this means that the risk of a life-threatening anaphylactic shock following a sting can be reduced.

How Does Immunotherapy Work?

Sturm emphasizes that consistently pursued immunotherapy for wasp venom allergy has particularly good prospects of success. Studies show that a large proportion of treated patients exhibit significantly less pronounced reactions to stings after completing the therapy. In many cases, the therapy can noticeably improve the quality of life of those affected, as the constant fear of a sting in everyday life diminishes.

For the coming weeks, experts advise allergy sufferers to keep their emergency medications in stock and to consult with their treating physician. Anyone who does not yet have an allergy pen but suffers from a known insect sting allergy should have their symptoms and personal risk clarified medically. Regular check-ups are also recommended for those already undergoing immunotherapy.

The WHO classifies allergies worldwide as one of the most common chronic diseases. In Europe, severe allergic reactions to insect stings are a recognized health risk, with the number of those affected varying by region and study. Timely diagnosis and individually tailored therapy are considered key to avoiding emergencies.

Shortages in emergency medications and the availability of desensitization substances are continuously monitored according to experts. Patients are advised to contact specialized outpatient clinics in case of uncertainties.

In addition to acute medical care, preventive measures also play a role. These include avoiding risky situations outdoors, wearing suitable clothing while gardening, and educating family members and colleagues about the correct behavior in an emergency. This way, risks in everyday life can be reduced until a permanent solution through immunotherapy takes effect.
