The former Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, will be crowned the new leader of the British Labour Party on Friday, thereby succeeding the outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The former Mayor of Greater Manchester will be crowned leader of the governing Labour Party today (from 1:00 p.m.). In the days before the succession announcement, Burnham secured a broad majority of Labour MPs. This clears the way for his appointment as Prime Minister, which is scheduled for the following Monday.

The 56-year-old is more the type of a "people fisher," who is trusted to sell unpopular decisions more convincingly both within his own faction and among the British population. In polls, Burnham enjoys high approval ratings and is regarded within the social democratic party as a figure of hope for winning back voters from the right-wing populist party Reform UK.
