Andy Burnham is set to succeed Keir Starmer as chair of the British Labour Party on Friday and to be appointed as the new Prime Minister of Great Britain by King Charles III. the following Monday.
Background on the change at the party leadership
Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Manchester, is regarded within the Labour Party as a figure of hope in the fight against the loss of voters to the right-wing populist party Reform UK. In the days before the planned takeover of the party leadership, Burnham secured, according to his own account, a broad majority of Labour MPs. Should he indeed be appointed, he would be the seventh head of government of Great Britain within ten years.
