An anesthesiologist charged with gross negligent homicide in the October 2024 death of a 55-year-old woman at a dental practice pleaded not guilty on the first day of his trial, expressing condolences to the victim's family while disputing the prosecution's account.
The defendant, who is also trained as an emergency physician, addressed the court at the start of proceedings and expressed sympathy with the bereaved. "Ich möchte den Hinterbliebenen mein Beileid aussprechen," he said, adding that he no longer performs full anesthesia in outpatient settings. He also said it was "furchtbar leid, was passiert ist" ("terribly sorry for what happened").
Background of the case
The patient, a 55-year-old woman, had been scheduled for a complicated jaw operation at the dental practice. Prosecutors allege that the anesthesiologist's approach during the procedure triggered a cardiac arrest and oxygen deprivation to the brain, which ultimately caused her death.
In his testimony, the anesthesiologist insisted he had followed established medical practice. "Ich habe den Arbeitsplatz für alle Eventualitäten vorbereitet und die Narkose streng nach dem standardisierten Prozedere eingeleitet," he told the court. He maintained that "es in keiner Weise Bedenken gegeben" had been given.
