The head of AI company Anthropic, Dario Amodei, has called for a slower development pace at the top amid the competition for ever more capable AI systems and warned of potential damages in the three-digit billions.
Amodei argued for throttling the pace of the most powerful models while continuing to push ahead briskly at the layers below. He described the picture of a race in which the front brakes while those behind accelerate as a deliberate decision rather than a compromise.
He pointed to a specific warning marker: for the coming six to twelve months, Amodei outlined a scenario in which a networked AI system could blanket the entire internet with a persistent botnet and cause damages amounting to several hundred billion dollars. He cited this order of magnitude as a reference point, not an exact forecast.
