Belfast, 10 June 2026

Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters in Belfast set vehicles and buildings on fire and blocked roads on Tuesday evening, one day after a knife attack that left one man seriously injured.

The unrest in the Northern Irish capital followed the spread of a video showing an attacker repeatedly stabbing a bloodied man on the ground, apparently attempting to slit his throat. Police said the attack occurred on a Monday on an open street in Belfast. The graphic footage shocked the country and circulated widely on social media before authorities asked the public to stop sharing it.

According to police, a 30-year-old man from Sudan, who is legally in the United Kingdom after receiving a five-year visa in 2023, was arrested in connection with the stabbing. He has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon and death threats, and was due to be brought before a judge on Wednesday. Police stated that there are no indications of a terrorist background to the attack, and the motive remains unclear.

Suspect and charges

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of protesters, many of them masked, gathered at several locations across Belfast. Demonstrators set fire to a bus, several cars and a building on the fringe of the city centre, and blocked roads with burning debris. Fires were started in bins around 7:30 p.m., according to a local resident, and burning buildings were visible on television broadcasts.
