Police Operation Against the Art Action

Around 15 police officers ended the action and filed charges against Ishay and Vice-Rector Gerhild Steinbach on suspicion of disturbing the public order. For Ishay, the situation is "vollkommen absurd": "Zuerst bekomme ich als jüdischer Student zwei Anzeigen, weil ich mich künstlerisch gegen ein antisemitisches Ehrenmal engagiere." Shortly afterward, he was subjected to antisemitic abuse, with a passerby shouting "Judenschwein" at him and spitting on him.

According to reports, a racist incident occurred immediately after the police operation: a local resident reportedly insulted the group as "Scheiß Juden" and "Judenschweine," shouted "Hitler war ein Idol," and repeatedly spat at people who tried to intervene. "Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war von der Polizei niemand mehr da", Ishay said. The chairwoman of the Jewish Austrian Students' Association (Jüdische österreichische Hochschüler:innen), Milli Li Rabinovici, was also on site and witnessed the attacks.

The Lueger Monument has been at the center of fierce debates for years. Karl Lueger shaped Vienna as mayor from 1897 until his death in 1910, but was a rabid antisemite. Adolf Hitler dedicated an entire chapter to him in "Mein Kampf," describing him as the "gewaltigsten deutschen Bürgermeister aller Zeiten." As recently as the end of April, the Identitarian front organization Aktion451 distributed flyers with antisemitic propaganda featuring Karl Lueger, captioned: "Schluss mit der Umerziehung! Volksfeindliche Ideologien raus aus unseren Universitäten!" The Identitarians have repeatedly held rallies at the Lueger Monument in the past, most recently in the summer of 2025.

The Lueger Monument as a Contested Symbol

Back in 2022, several Holocaust survivors, including Nobel laureate Eric Kandel and journalist Georg Stefan Troller, addressed an open letter to Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) calling for the monument's removal, arguing that Lueger's antisemitism had laid the ideological groundwork for the Holocaust. "Die gesamte jüdische Gemeinde fordert die Entfernung des Denkmals", Guttmann told the "Standard." Ishay's demand is equally unequivocal: "Dieses Denkmal muss entfernt werden." The historical context is explosive: after the "Anschluss" of Austria, Jews had been forced by Nazi order to scrub anti-Nazi slogans from the streets.

Ishay sharply criticizes the reinterpretation of the monument as a memorial against antisemitism: "Nach wie vor ist dieser Platz kein Lern- und Dialogort gegen Antisemitismus. Dieses Ehrenmal trägt antisemitische Kontinuitäten weiter." For him, the events confirm his criticism of how the monument is dealt with. "Das ist natürlich einschneidend, aber leider auch erwartbar."

Political Reactions

Vienna's City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler (SPÖ) condemned the antisemitic insults and attacks: "In Wien herrscht null Toleranz für Antisemitismus! Kunst kann herausfordern und Debatten anstoßen - sie darf niemals mit Hass, Einschüchterung oder antisemitischen Angriffen beantwortet werden." Green Party council member Lukas Hammer also expressed outrage: "Es ist völlig unverständlich, dass ausgerechnet gegen jene vorgegangen wird, die auf Antisemitismus aufmerksam machen." Should Ishay or other participants face costs or administrative penalties as a result of the police operation, Hammer pledged support. The same tour on Thursday proceeded without incident.
