Zillertal, Austria — May 11, 2026

Austrian political leaders have reacted firmly following revelations of suspected Nazi rehabilitation activities in the Zillertal region of Tyrol.

Political Reactions

The justice spokesperson for Austria’s Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), Selma Yildirim, stated she was "schockiert" ("shocked"). The Tyrolean politician called for a "volle Aufklärung und Konsequenzen" ("full clarification and consequences"), adding: "Wir brauchen klare Kante gegen Rechtsextremismus in Österreich." ("We need a clear stance against right-wing extremism in Austria.")

Sabine Schatz, the SPÖ’s head of historical memory, emphasized that Nazi rehabilitation was not a "Burschenspaß" ("youthful prank") but rather "ein Verbrechen und gehört konsequent verfolgt und bestraft" ("a crime that must be rigorously prosecuted and punished"). Elisabeth Fleischanderl, leader of the SPÖ group in Tyrol, argued that these incidents demonstrate "wie sehr wir den Kampf gegen Rechtsextremismus intensivieren müssen" ("how much we must intensify the fight against right-wing extremism").
