Local models such as Qwen already meet these requirements, while Western providers such as OpenAI or Google have not been approved in China to date.

For Apple, China remains an important sales market despite the general downturn in the smartphone market. The company has recently lost market share there to local manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi. With new AI features, the iPhone is intended to become attractive again for Chinese consumers, including in competition with devices that use Huawei's own HarmonyOS AI system.

Significance for the Chinese Smartphone Market

As Reuters further reported, the in-house AI model is still at an early stage of development. No specific release date has been given. It is also unclear to what extent the new model will supplement Qwen technology or replace it in the long term. Apple and Alibaba declined to comment on the new details when asked.

Observers see the move as a sign that Apple is differentiating its AI strategy more strongly by region. While in Europe and the US the focus is primarily on partnerships with OpenAI and other Western providers, the company is relying in China on a mix of local cooperation and in-house development. In doing so, Apple is also responding to the growing importance of Chinese AI models in international competition.

Regardless of this, it remains to be seen how Chinese regulators will respond to an independent Apple model. Should Apple obtain approval, it would be one of the first Western AI systems to operate in the People's Republic without full dependence on a Chinese partner. Until then, Alibaba with Qwen continues to be Apple's most important AI partner for Apple Intelligence in China.
