Archaeologists have discovered several nearly 2,000-year-old tombs on the Egyptian Mediterranean coast near Marina al-Alamein, including an approximately two-and-a-half-meter-long granite sarcophagus with an intact lid.

Update from July 5, 2026: The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities released new details on Friday about the archaeological finds on the Mediterranean coast. According to the ministry, the latest discoveries rank among the most significant of the ongoing campaigns.
According to the information provided, the excavations brought to light several previously unknown burial complexes from the Greco-Roman period. In some chambers, the stone slabs were still in their original position, the ministry explained. In total, 44 tombs are now known at Marina al-Alamein since the site was discovered during construction work in 1986.
