The public consultation phase for Southwest Thuringia’s new regional plan, which prioritizes wind energy expansion, began on May 18, 2026, with a virtual information conference scheduled to explain the process and legal framework.

Regional Plan Details

The draft regional plan includes 40 priority areas for wind power, covering approximately 7,900 hectares—1.7% of the region’s total area—to meet federal requirements. The plan spans the districts of Hildburghausen, Sonneberg, Schmalkalden-Meiningen, and the city of Suhl.
