Southwest Thuringia Begins Public Consultation on Wind Energy Expansion Plan

Public Participation Process

Citizens, municipalities, and public interest groups have until July 20, 2026, to submit statements and objections. The regional assembly approved the second draft on March 25, 2026, and released it for public participation.

To ensure accessibility, the conference will be broadcast in multiple locations, including Veilsdorf, Eisfeld, and Schleusingen, for residents without internet access. The final decision on the regional plan is expected by the end of 2027.

Broader Planning Scope

Beyond wind energy, the regional plan addresses infrastructure, settlement development, agriculture, and nature conservation. It is based on legal requirements under the Spatial Planning Law and Thuringian State Planning Law.

The plan’s focus on wind energy has sparked discussions, particularly as around two-thirds of the designated areas are forested. Proponents argue the expansion is necessary to meet renewable energy targets, while critics raise concerns about environmental impacts.

Landrat Gregor stressed the need for clear communication about the submission process, urging stakeholders to engage actively. The virtual conference on May 18 at 18:00 will provide further details and answer procedural questions.
