Missed penalty sets early tone

The match began as badly as possible for the Albiceleste. As early as the 15th minute, Yasser Ibrahim gave Egypt the lead from a set piece. Just four minutes later came the flashpoint of the game: Haissem Hassan fouled Nicolás Tagliafico in the penalty area, and referee François Letexier pointed to the spot.

Egypt adds another – and comes under pressure

Lionel Messi, 39 years old, took responsibility and was denied by Egypt's goalkeeper Mohamed Oufa Shobeir. It was the Argentine captain's second missed penalty at this World Cup – he had also failed from the spot in the group stage against Austria. According to the broadcaster, no player had previously missed two penalties in the course of a single World Cup, excluding penalty shootouts.

Shortly before halftime, the Argentines nearly added to their tally, but Shobeir also made brilliant saves against Alexis Mac Allister (28th) and Julián Álvarez (39th). The teams headed into the dressing rooms with Egypt holding a narrow 1:0 lead.

After the restart, Mostafa Ziko made it 2:0 (67th) after an assist from Hassan and a pass from Mohamed Salah. Salah, five years Messi's junior, was one of the most prominent performers on the Egyptian side on the evening. However, Ziko's strike in the 58th minute, following an earlier whistle against Marwan Ateya on Martínez after VAR intervention, was ruled out – meaning Egypt stood on the pitch with what looked like an extended lead for only a few minutes.
