Kansas City, July 12, 2026
Argentina has booked its place in the World Cup semifinal, defeating Switzerland 3-1 (1-1) after extra time in the quarterfinal in Kansas City, and will face England next.
Match flow and turning point
Argentina won its FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against Switzerland 3-1 after extra time. At Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, the South Americans sealed the result after 120 minutes. Lionel Scaloni, coach of the defending champions, afterwards spoke of a historic performance by his team.
The opening stages were shaped by a set piece in the 10th minute: Alexis Mac Allister headed the favorites in front from a corner delivered by Lionel Messi. The Liverpool player's goal also marked the start of an intense match in which both sides were largely on level terms. Messi himself did not score in this game, bringing to an end his streak of nine consecutive World Cup matches with at least one goal.
Swiss equalizer and Swiss fight
Switzerland held its own for long stretches of regular time and drew level through Dan Ndoye in the 67th minute. Ricardo Rodriguez had initiated the move with a pass that Ndoye finished off inside the box. It was already Switzerland's second equalizer in the space of a few minutes, after Emiliano Martínez had parried a header from Ndoye in the 65th minute. The match developed into an open exchange of blows.
