Buenos Aires, July 7, 2026
Argentina pulled off a dramatic comeback in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, turning a 2-0 deficit against Egypt into a 3-2 victory and booking their place in the quarterfinals, with Lionel Messi and head coach Lionel Scaloni shedding emotional tears after the final whistle.
A Dramatic Deficit and the Turning Point
The match at the Olympic Stadium in Atlanta appeared early on to be a straightforward affair — though in favor of the underdog Pharaohs. After goals from Yasser Ibrahim (15') and Mostafa Ziko (67'), the defending champions trailed 2-0 and looked headed for a shock upset. Egypt goalkeeper Shobeir proved unbeatable over long stretches, keeping his side in the game.
Things initially failed to click for Argentina. Superstar Messi missed a penalty in the 21st minute and barely got a foothold in the first half. Only after the break, and especially in the closing stages, did the world champions fight their way back. Cristian Romero headed home in the 79th minute from a Messi cross to make it 2-1 and bring the Albiceleste back into the contest.
