Atlanta, July 7, 2026
Argentina's national coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi is fit and will start in the World Cup quarter-final against Egypt on Tuesday in Atlanta.
Following the hard-fought 3:2 victory after extra time against Cape Verde in the round of the last 16, relief is the prevailing mood at defending champions Argentina ahead of the next knockout match: Lionel Messi is available. National coach Lionel Scaloni said so at a press conference before the duel with Egypt. "He will play again," Scaloni said with regard to his 39-year-old captain. "He is doing well, despite having played 120 minutes at the age of 39." Argentina can therefore field its full squad on Tuesday in Atlanta to advance to the semi-finals of the World Cup.
